
Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School has won the “Green School” title for the second time as part of the “Green Schools Project” carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and the Turkish Cypriot Women’s Entrepreneurship Association (GİKAD). In the same project, Near East Bank has won the “Environmentally Friendly Business” award.
As part of the “Green Schools Project”, which aims to spread environmental awareness and sustainable development education, Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School has retained its “Green School” title this year as well. Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School has once again been awarded the “Green School” award for the projects developed by its students on its environmentally friendly campus. In the same project, Near East Bank has won the “Environmentally Friendly Business” award for the support it provided to Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School.
The “Green Schools Project”, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and the Turkish Cypriot Women’s Entrepreneurial Association (GİKAD), aims to create environmental awareness in students, ensure that they establish a strong bond with nature and gain sustainable life habits. In the project, in which many schools participated, Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School stood out with its original and creative applications.
The projects developed by Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School students throughout the year were highly appreciated by the jury along with their visuals. Within the scope of the studies carried out with the slogan “Don’t Just Say Garbage! Don’t Give Up on Recycling!”, students designed bird feeders, decorative objects, dinosaur, giraffe, turtle and tree figures from waste materials. In addition, various environmental activities such as compost production, blue cap and waste battery collection campaigns, Alagadi beach cleaning, greenhouse installation, vegetable and flower planting were carried out. Under the leadership of the ecology club, the school garden was greened and a stronger bond with nature was established.

Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Primary School Principal Canan Gürkan said “Raising our students as environmentally sensitive individuals is one of the greatest responsibilities for us educators. Being included in the Green Schools Project for two consecutive years and regaining the titles of ‘Green School’ and ‘Green Business’ is the most meaningful result of our hard work.”
Emphasizing that the projects put forward by the students throughout the year not only created environmental awareness, but also developed their imagination, cooperation skills and sense of social responsibility, Canan Gürkan said, “Our students came into direct contact with nature with these projects, they learned by experience how valuable it is to produce by recycling waste and to beautify life by protecting the environment. The effort and excitement shown by each of our children gave us hope.”
